Han
Overview
The han was the primary administrative and feudal unit of provincial organization in Sorestia historically, as well as on other planets such as Kageri.
It corresponds to a small local state with its own agricultural, military and economic autonomy, typically under the rule of a noble subordinate to a King or Emperor.
Each han is governed by a lord or family, known as the house lord, responsible for order, production and defense of the territory.

Structure
Each han includes a main castle, agricultural settlements and artisan communities. Inhabitants work the lord’s estates, cultivate grains and maintain reserves for harsh seasons.
The han lord is obliged to provide taxes, soldiers and supplies to the royal or imperial administration but retains broad authority to enforce local laws and appoint officials.
Military Role
The han functions as a military readiness cell. Each lord maintains a personal guard, the han guard, and can mobilize men during wartime. Conflicts between neighboring han are common, especially during food shortages or when central authority weakens.
Cultural Aspect
The concept of the han is deeply embedded in the mindset of early Sorestian peoples. It symbolizes loyalty, land and honor.
The phrase “a man belongs to his han” is often used to describe the sense of duty and submission to social structure as well as the inevitable fate determined by birth.
