Murmur
Overview
Murmur is a widely used name across countries and planets of the Liberal Alliance and the Syndarion Union for an illicit rumor platform and bulletin board for Plex, Nexo, Holocast, and computers
It typically broadcasts real-time information on police movements, drones, raids, and SPS checks, mixed with unverified, false, or fictional stories
Platforms
- Plex: lightweight client (text + small images)
- Nexo: full client (threads, maps, notifications)
- Holo overlay: micro-holograms as event indicators
- Desktops: GUI application or CLI terminal
- Wallcast / Holocast: “MurmurCast” ticker or full-screen board in private channels
Features
- Threads by region/topic: Gates, Patrols, Drones, Raids, “Snakes & Dragons” (satirical or fictional)
- Notifications (pings) with TTL options and geographic filtering
- Map / heatmap with icons for Scarab drones, checkpoints, and lockdowns
- Media upload with automatic metadata removal (not always successful)
- Post reliability rating: Trust ↑ / Fake ↓ + “Noise” indicator
- Predefined “Signals” codes: RAID, GATE, SCAN, SCARAB, BLACKOUT
- Device limits (e.g., 3 posts/hour) to reduce spam
Access
- Registration via burn-key (unique registration token expiring after first login)
- Linked to the device hardware-ID (Plex / Nexo / Holo), forwarding is blocked
Security and Risks
- End-to-end encryption between nodes, but closed-source clients may have vulnerabilities
- Correlation attacks (time + location + hardware-ID) expose users to detection by law or SPS
- Traps: government accounts posting misleading content
- Mirrors: retransmitters to Wallcast for censorship resistance, high risk of detection
- Offline packages (“Murmur Cache”): manually transported bundles of posts (e.g., via Skaff) uploaded later
Privacy Settings (per user)
- Ghost Post: author identity deleted after TTL, content remains
- Decoy heartbeats: random signals to obscure activity
- Word/region filters
- Panic Switch: code phrase transforms interface to an innocuous screen (e.g., drink menu or news on Wallcast)
Legal Status
Possession or use is illegal almost everywhere. Common penalties: device seizure, fines, Social Point reduction, repeated offenses may lead to arrest
Social Dynamics
- Mod-ring groups (unofficial coordinators) mark posts: Verified (✓), Unverified (?), or Bait (⚠)
- “Snakes & Dragons” functions as a humorous outlet or misdirection, though some seemingly wild stories turn out to be true
Relationship with Authorities
- Use increases likelihood of flags in digital surveillance systems (suspicious patterns)
- The “Scrubber” tool reduces traces, but leaves noise in logs
