Markoni
Overview
Markoni is the fourth planet of the Parme system and the home of the Republic of Markon, an independent planetary state belonging to the Union of Independent Planets.
It is a temperate and densely populated world with extensive agricultural lands, powerful industries, advanced technology and numerous large cities. It is known for its textile industry, metallurgy, military equipment production and, above all, the mercenary companies that operate throughout the known galaxy.
The Republic of Markon is a parliamentary democracy with elections, courts and protected political freedoms. In practice, the great agricultural clans, industrial corporations, mercenary companies and banks exercise considerable influence over political parties and the government.
Technological development and political unification did not erase the social structures of the earlier feudal age. Many descendants of the old lords transformed their family lands and political power into corporate property. Their titles were abolished, but the concentration of wealth and land survived in new forms.

Parme System
The star of the system is named Parme. Its two most important inhabited planets are Mechory and Markoni.
Both planets had already developed advanced technology and powerful weapon systems when the Explorers mapped the region. The major interplanetary powers competed for their annexation but failed to subjugate them.
Mechory and Markoni formed the original core around which the Union of Independent Planets was established. Over time, they became important centers of technical knowledge, manufacturing, trade and interplanetary contracts.
The economic relationship between the two worlds is close. Mechory specializes in financing, mediation, intelligence gathering and the organization of complex agreements. Markoni possesses a large productive base, military expertise and an extensive pool of personnel capable of carrying out those contracts.
Lytharia
Markoni has one large moon named Lytharia. The name derives from Lythara and is also found among the satellites of many inhabited worlds where traditions of the Heptad or the Mother Goddess survive.
Lytharia is visible for much of the night from most inhabited regions of the planet. Its presence has influenced local festivals, agricultural traditions and ceremonies associated with the Mother Goddess.
Geography
Markoni has four major continents, Arvella, Bellora, Korvessa and Tarsena. The Maremarko Ocean extends between them.
The climate is predominantly temperate. Differences between the continents result from their geographical positions, ocean currents, elevation and major mountain ranges.
Arvella
Arvella is the most urbanized and densely populated continent. It contains vast temperate plains, rivers, coastal regions and extensive urban complexes.
Markona, the capital and largest city on the planet, is located there. Many of the largest industries, banks, transportation companies and mercenary companies also maintain their headquarters in Arvella.
Continuous urban expansion has joined several older cities and suburbs into enormous inhabited zones. Great social and economic differences exist between the tall buildings of the prosperous central districts and the poorer neighborhoods of the outer regions.
Bellora
Bellora is the most important agricultural continent. It includes fertile plains, low hills, great rivers and extensive livestock farming regions.
Much of its cultivable land belongs to corporations and landowning families. Thousands of small agricultural communities cultivate rented land and surrender a significant portion of their production to its owners.
Bellora produces food, animal products and raw materials for the textile industry. Despite the wealth generated by its production, it contains some of the poorest regions of the planet.
Korvessa
Korvessa is a mountainous and forested continent. Steep mountain ranges, narrow valleys and cold plateaus cover much of its interior.
Mines, industrial cities, military installations and mercenary training centers are found in its lower regions.
The autonomous territory of the Kuroka lies deep within the inaccessible mountains. The government of the Republic of Markon controls the plains, the main transportation routes and the largest valleys, but exercises no meaningful administrative or police authority in Kuroka territory.
Tarsena
Tarsena is the warmest and most sparsely populated continent. It includes dry plains, temperate steppes, rocky plateaus and extensive livestock farming regions.
Its subsoil is rich in minerals. Many settlements were founded around mines, metallurgical facilities and stations used to transport raw materials.
The great distances and low population density facilitate the activities of smugglers, illegal corporations and independent armed groups.
Maremarko Ocean
The Maremarko Ocean separates the four continents and contains numerous islands and island groups.
Maritime transportation remains important, particularly for bulky agricultural products, minerals and industrial cargo. Large ports connect agricultural and mining regions with factories and spaceports.
Several remote islands are used as private corporate facilities, military training centers, warehouses or supply stations.
Republic of Markon
The Republic of Markon is a parliamentary democracy exercising sovereignty over the entire planet, with the exception of the effectively autonomous Kuroka territory.
Citizens elect the planetary assembly and local administrations. The government is formed by the parliamentary majority and is responsible for defense, foreign policy, interplanetary trade and the operation of the central state services.
Political parties operate freely, but their electoral campaigns are financed to a considerable degree by corporations, banks, agricultural clans and professional interest groups.
The largest corporations maintain legal departments, intelligence services and private armed forces. Their influence over legislation and state administration is significant, particularly in matters of labor, agricultural ownership and military contracts.
Political Unification
Before industrialization, Markoni was divided into numerous han. Local lords controlled the land, the farmers and the armed forces of their territories.
The growth of cities, industries and new forms of trade gradually weakened the feudal system. Wars between the han, peasant uprisings and conflicts between the lords and the emerging urban corporations followed.
Political unification was completed with the establishment of the Republic of Markon. The han were abolished as political entities and hereditary power ceased to receive legal recognition.
Many ruling families lost their power. Others transformed their lands, workshops and armed forces into corporations. Their descendants became landowners, industrialists, bankers and financiers of political parties.
The old feudal obligation was gradually replaced by contracts, rent and debt.
Economy
The economy of Markoni combines agriculture, livestock farming, mining, heavy industry, textiles, military equipment production and the provision of armed services.
The corporations of the planet manufacture vehicles, vessel components, weapons, armor, machinery and equipment for agricultural and industrial work.
The textile workshops and factories of Markoni are known for the quality of their fabrics. Expensive garments sold on worlds of the Liberal Alliance and the Syndarion Union are made from materials produced in Bellora and processed in Cadria.
Interplanetary trade is extensive. Markoni imports technology, specialized components, medicine and financial services, while exporting food, fabrics, minerals, industrial products, weapons and military services.
Agriculture and Debt
Much of the agricultural land belongs to corporations and landowning families. Many farmers rent the estates they cultivate and own no land of their own.
Corporations often require farmers to purchase seeds, tools, agricultural machinery and crop protection materials from the same company. These expenses are added to the family debt and deducted from the value of its production.
A poor harvest, illness or the death of a family member can create a debt that passes to the next generation. Although slavery is forbidden, financial obligations can severely restrict the freedom of a family.
Corporations often offer debt cancellation or financial assistance in exchange for a younger member of the family signing a service contract.
Service Contracts
Training and long term service contracts are recognized by the laws of the Republic of Markon.
A corporation may undertake the training, feeding, equipment and housing of a young person. In return, that person is obligated to work for the corporation for a large part of their life.
The contracts provide wages, but also include high training costs, departure penalties and obligations connected to the family of the worker. In practice, leaving may be impossible without repaying the old debt and paying considerable compensation.
Mercenary companies make extensive use of such contracts. A soldier who abandons service may be pursued for violating the agreement, while the corporation may take financial action against the soldier’s family.
Officially, no worker is the property of a corporation. In practice, many people have no means of leaving their employer.
Major Cities
Markona
Markona is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Markon. It is located in Arvella and serves as the political, economic and administrative center of the planet.
The planetary assembly, government ministries, highest courts, largest banks and headquarters of many corporations are located there.
The city has an enormous spaceport, tall buildings, densely populated districts and an active nightlife. Beyond the wealthy central areas extend poorer neighborhoods where gangs, agents and illegal businesses operate.
Montara
Montara is a major industrial city in Arvella. It is a center of mechanical engineering, vehicle construction, military equipment production and vessel repair.
Many mercenary companies acquire weapons, equipment and specially modified vehicles there.
Bellavo
Bellavo is a coastal commercial city and an important spaceport. It contains large warehouses, transportation companies, contract agencies and supply facilities.
Legal trade coexists with extensive smuggling. The authorities control the main ports, but a large number of smaller companies and intermediaries operate at the edge of legality.
Cadria
Cadria is located in Bellora and is the most important textile center on the planet.
Its factories and workshops produce fabrics for the domestic market and for export. The city is also known for its craftsmen, clothing designers and commercial exhibitions.
Tervano
Tervano is the largest city in the agricultural regions of Bellora. Agricultural production, land, machinery and farming contracts are bought and sold there.
The largest landholding corporations maintain offices in the city. Many decisions affecting the lives of thousands of rural families are made inside its corporate buildings.
Orvello
Orvello is located at the foothills of the Korvessa mountain ranges. It is known for its mercenary companies, military training centers and weapon markets.
The city does not belong to the autonomous Kuroka territory, but it is one of the most important points of contact between the mountain communities and the rest of the planet.
Varello
Varello is a mining and metallurgical city in Tarsena. It developed around old mines and large mineral processing facilities.
Factories producing armor, weapon components and industrial machinery also operate in the region.
Armed Forces
The Republic of Markon maintains a small but powerful professional army and a large military fleet.
The fleet is the principal guarantee of the independence of the planet. Its development began before the establishment of the Union of Independent Planets and accelerated when the major powers attempted to annex the Parme system.
Many soldiers and officers previously served in mercenary companies. Their experience in real operations on different worlds has created a military with a high level of professional competence.
The government offers stable service, social status and better conditions to experienced mercenaries who wish to leave private companies.
Markoni Special Corps
The Markoni Special Corps is the elite special operations force of the Republic of Markon. Its official acronym is MSC, while its members are widely known as the Markini.
The Markini are selected from the professional army, the fleet and, in some cases, from experienced former mercenaries.
They are trained for reconnaissance missions, rescue operations, actions against pirates, infiltration, urban combat and operations on foreign planets.
Their reputation extends beyond the Union of Independent Planets. Even military personnel from the major powers recognize their experience, adaptability and effectiveness.
Mercenary Companies
Markoni is the most important center for the recruitment of mercenaries in the known galaxy.
The companies differ significantly in size and activity. Some possess their own vessels, military camps, training centers and thousands of contracted soldiers. Others consist of only a few teams that undertake limited operations.
Their services include facility protection, cargo escort, rescue operations, suppression of uprisings, intelligence gathering, abductions, sabotage and warfare.
Many contracts are organized through corporations and agents on Mechory. The client may not know which group will carry out the operation, while the mercenaries may not know the identity of the true client.
The complexity of contracts and corporate relationships allows governments, banks and major corporations to use armed force without being directly connected to it.
Gangs and Independent Contractors
The great cities of Markoni contain numerous gangs. Many children from poor families join them in search of protection, food and income.
The gangs control neighborhoods, illegal markets, entertainment establishments and trafficking networks. Some cooperate with mercenary companies and serve as recruiting grounds for new members.
There are also many independent contractors who accept assignments through agents and intermediaries. They may be former mercenaries, pilots, security specialists, thieves, drivers or technicians.
The distinction between a legal security company, a mercenary group and an organized gang is not always clear.
Kuroka
The Kuroka are a small mountain people of Korvessa. Their ancestors abandoned the plains during the feudal age and established independent communities in the inaccessible mountains.
Their region functions as an effectively autonomous territory. The government silently accepts their autonomy because a military operation in the mountains would come at great cost and could provoke retaliation in the cities.
The Kuroka maintain their own elite force of mercenaries and assassins. They also operate Urban Networks in many cities on Markoni.
They do not seek to control the planet or impose their social organization upon other peoples. Their military strength serves the autonomy and survival of their community.
Religion
The Republic of Markon has no official state religion. Its two most important religious traditions are the Heptad and the worship of the Mother Goddess.
The Heptad has a stronger presence in the great cities and maintains organized temples and clergy. The Mother Goddess remains particularly influential in villages and agricultural communities.
The distinction is not absolute. There are urban temples of the Mother Goddess and villages with many Heptadists. The two religions coexist peacefully and marriages between their believers are common.
Many statues and ancient temples of the Mother Goddess survive across the planet. Their shared traditions and the presence of Lythara within the Heptad allow believers of both religions to regard one another as religious relatives.
Society
The society of Markoni is characterized by great contrasts.
The cities possess advanced technology, tall buildings, universities, hospitals, entertainment establishments and extensive commercial markets. At the same time, large numbers of people live in poor neighborhoods and work under insecure contracts.
In agricultural regions, families cultivate the same land for many generations without owning it. In the cities, young people can change their social position, but the easiest available path often leads through a gang, a security company or a mercenary unit.
Personal freedom is a fundamental principle of the Republic of Markon. Economic dependence, however, restricts the choices of a large part of the population in practice.
Relations with the Union of Independent Planets
Markoni is one of the founding and most powerful members of the Union of Independent Planets.
The union has no central government or unified military command. Markoni’s participation is based on diplomatic agreements, commercial cooperation, information exchange and temporary alliances.
The powerful fleet of Markoni serves as an important deterrent against intervention by the major interplanetary powers.
The government avoids permanent alliances that would restrict its autonomy, but cooperates with other independent worlds when shared interests are threatened.
External Influence
The Central Stellar Bank, corporations from Mechory and major offworld groups exercise considerable economic influence on Markoni.
The relationships between banks, landholding corporations, industries and mercenary organizations are complex. Payments and instructions often pass through successive corporations, intermediaries and contracts.
This labyrinth allows those with sufficient wealth to organize operations, attacks or assassinations without appearing as their direct employers.
Despite this external economic influence, the Republic of Markon maintains its political and military independence. Its government, corporations and citizens regard with particular suspicion any power that might transform economic dependence into political control.
